It is a relatively rare species of humid montane forest and cloud forests. It has two well-defined subpopulations that may actually belong to two good species, sometimes called the chieftains of the north and the south mountain. Vocalizations should be studied and compared between northern and southern populations. Many vocalizations are rough and nasal in this species, although some chirps, and ringing whistles also occur.
