Flame-winged parakeet
ENDEMIC parakeet of rough and loud call. It is usually observed in large groups. Its name pyrrhura means red tail and derives from the Greek roots purrhos = red and ouros = tail. Calliptera means beautiful wings and is derived from the Greek kallos = beautiful and pteros = winged.
It has a pale yellowish dull beak, its body is mainly green with blackish brown crown, dark brown throat and chest; the edges of the wings are yellow with orange spots. Its endemic distribution covers both slopes of the Eastern range, from Boyacá to the south west of Cundinamarca.
